1938年神戸生まれ。1963年より、三菱電機（株）に18年間、早稲田大学に28年間、一貫して情報関係の研究・教育に携わってきた。企業では「データ伝送方式」「誤り訂正アルゴリズム」や「コンピュータネットワーク」の開発に、大学では「一般化連接符号」「フォールトトレラントコンピューティング」など情報理論と符号理論の研究に取り組む。研究成果の一つ「ユークリッド復号法」は音楽用CDの誤り訂正法として、広く世界に実用化されている。
学生へのメッセージ
私達の身の周りでITは急速に進化しています。コンピュータはどんどん身近になり、その姿を変えていく時代です。このような時代にコンピュータを勉強するとき、コンピュータがただ「使える」ことに精通しているだけではなく、コンピュータの基本原理・本質を「分かる」ことが大切です。ネットワーク技術も同じです。RFIDやGigBeeなどの新技術も実用化され、私達の家庭生活をも変えようとしています。これに対処するためには、しっかりした基礎の上に新しい技術を盛りつけしなければなりません。「使える」と「分かる」ことを両輪として、新しい技術にも常に興味を持って取り組んでほしいと思います。これからが皆さんの出番なのです。

国内外のパソコンが、誰の手により、どのようにして開発されてきたかの歴史をたどりながら、全体としてパソコンとは何かを理解する。パソコンには、ハードウェア（プロセッサ、メモリ、グラッフィク回路など）、基本ソフトウェア、応用ソフトウェア、周辺機器（マウス、キーボード、ハード・ディスク、CD、DVDなど）、インターネット通信機器などさまざまな要素がある。本講座では、それらの各々につき、歴史や原理や意義を説明してゆく。 |

| コンピュータ進化論 科目紹介 |
コンピュータは、スーパーコン、大型機、ミニコン、ワークステーション、オフコン、パソコン、組み込みマイコンなど多彩な形態で発展してきた。それらに付随する周辺機器やソフトウェアも同じである。その中には、フロッピー・ディスクや直列・並列ケーブルのように、もはや使われなくなったレガシー機器と呼ばれるものもある。本演習では、そうしたさまざまなハードウェア・ソフウェアについて調べ、その盛衰の要因を考えつつ、コンピュータに対する理解を深めてゆく。 |
